Teacher, She’s on my side!

I find friends in the most unlikely places.

Sixth grade! What a glorious year! It was the year of being plain old weird. My hair was long, strawberry blond and unruly. I was short, had freckles and super skinny. Not a pretty picture. Oh and one of my front teeth was behind the others so my smile was a little off.

Kids were picking on me because of...well..everything. But there was another! She had Long strawberry blond hair, a bit more ruly than mine, she was tall and thin.  Her skin was as white as snow and I looked like I’d tanned through a screen door. I still don’t think that’s a funny joke,.... well. Maybe?

Anyway this was an era when we had one class all day long. We didn’t change rooms or places. It was... interesting. Guess who was assigned to sit together? Long legs and short legged me.

Let the games begin! The girl with the long legs needed to sit by someone with short legs. So, guess what happened next. Yep, two red heads at a table. Oh, we each shared a table with a cubby for books.  This is also a history lesson.

There were no computers, no computer stations, no such thing as an individual desk. It was “ the dark ages”. Man I feel old! One thing has remained the same...toasters...just thought I’d add that in.. lol. Anyway a dilemma ensued between the two redheaded 6th graders. The teacher had to start saying, “Get your legs on your own side!”

You see I didn’t understand the problem that Ms long legs was having. Nope, it was all about me. I needed my tiny little bony, short legged space! I was adamant that I keep my space. Well, Ms long legs had nowhere to go. She was also tall so she couldn’t hide her legs under the desk and when she tried to keep them out of the way they got in my space!

I bet that teacher remembers us to this day.  We fought like sisters, but became the best of friends. We’ve been friends for...well..since then.  We’ve both been through horrific situations. But we talk and we laugh about the good old days and the Leg wars...

We also had air raid drills, fire drills and earthquake drills. We spent a lot of time under that desk. We were doomed to be friends or the worst of enemies. I’m grateful that friendship won! I’d like to thank that teacher for making us stick it out. We are bonded for life!

You want to know something amazing? She’s still on my side, but in a whole other way.... Thank you my long legged friend forever!
